About

This documentary stems from an assignment in my documentary workshop course at Ithaca College's Park School of Communications. Under the direction of Dr. James Rada, I was tasked with searching the local area for a unique representation of the Arts for further exploration in the form of a 5-6 minute mini-documentary.

I stumbled across the website for Shearwater Productions (headquartered in Brooktondale, NY) and was fascinated by the wide variety of performances the company put on. I reached out to Shearwater's artistic director, Holly Adams, and that really got the ball rolling. I came to realize that what truly set Shearwater apart was its utilization of interactive theatre and its constant willingness and desire to break down the "fourth wall" between the actors and the audience. This was a really cool group I had discovered.

Shearwater The Documentary attempts to use Shearwater Productions and its many projects as a lens through which to view interactive theatre and its recent revival, as well as to remember why it has been such a cherished form of performance throughout history. I hope this film will highlight the importance of interactive theatre and show how one theatre company is doing an excellent job with it.
